Maybe it's just me, but something about seeing Logan brainwashed and under the control of Hydra really pisses me off. Seeing Logan having absolutely no control whatsoever with his own actions, yet only slightly conscious of what he's doing bothers me as to why no one else had ever thought of doing this to Wolverine and using him as their own tool.

We learn from this issue that Hydra had been planning on doing to several other superheroes what they had done to Logan: killing them, then bringing them back to life, brainwashed, and used as their own tool to support their own propaganda. Logan was on the top of their list; other heroes, including Captain America, Iron Man, Professor X, the Fantastic Four, and others appeared on their list as people they would like to capture and bring back alive. It would be interesting to see exactly how Hydra is able to do this.

I don't like reading this story arc so far; as I had stated before, I don't like seeing Wolverine used as a tool by someone else while he's only semi-conscious of what he is doing. Still, this means that this story arc will be interesting in seeing how and if Logan is able to take down all his targets that he has been programmed by Hydra to accomplish, and how Logan will be able to be un-brainwashed.

Finally, it's nice to see Logan back in his Wolverine costume for this series. It's okay to see Logan in civilian costume, but after so many issues of not donning his Wolverine costume (except for in the other X-titles), it's refreshing to see him doing what he does best in his Wolverine costume.

  • WOLVERINE (VOL. 2) #21:
"Enemy of the State: Part 2"

    IN THIS ISSUE:

Aboard the S.H.I.E.L.D aircraft carrier somewhere in the South Atlantic ocean, Wolverine was unleashing his uncontrolled fury on a group of armed S.H.I.E.L.D soldiers who were trying to stop him. Despite the pleas of on of the S.H.I.E.L.D soldiers, Elektra refused to step into the fight just yet, eyeing for the perfect opportunity for her to strike Wolverine. Finally, she sees her chance and using her sais (pair of 3-pronged daggers), she hits Logan in two pressure spots on his deltoids, paralyzing him. She tries to tell Logan that the thoughts going through his mind were not his, that he had been brainwashed by Hydra, and that it wasn't something that S.H.I.E.L.D couldn't undo.

Just then, a huge explosion rips through the side of the S.H.I.E.L.D aircraft, knocking Elektra and her sais off of him. Free again, he proceeds to use his claws to damage her sais, only to have Elektra move quickly around him to jam her damaged sais into his neck, disabling him once again. But in a few seconds, a sudden huge rush of water filled their compartment, instantly flooding the compartment with fast-moving ocean water. Elektra and the men are flushed out as Wolverine, free from her once again, was able to grab onto some structural support and close the door to the other compartment where she had been swept to. Wolverine is then able to swim out of the compartment into the ocean, where a school of shark was feasting on the dead soldiers' carcasses that had been swept out. Logan's own mind tells him to kill the sharks and to complete his mission that Hydra demanded of him.

About an hour later, as reinforcements came in to secure the S.H.I.E.L.D aircraft, Elektra, who had been rescued, tells the men that Wolverine had breached their security. They confirmed that Wolverine had downloaded all of their information, including defense codes and other sensitive national security details.

The next day, aboard a S.H.I.E.L.D air carrier, Nick Fury was briefing his security team about the current whereabouts of Logan, and confirmed that this entire attack had the Hand's imprint on it. Elektra, who was present, tells them about the Hand, and how they had a way to kill people, bring them back from the dead, and use them to their own liking. She believes that this was what happened to Logan. Nick Fury adds how they had been able to decode one of the Hand's encrypted messages, which stated that the people they were targeting for termination (Captain America, Professor X, Iron Man, etc.) were in fact people that they wanted to do what they had done to Logan, and bring them under their control. Nick decides to put an alert to every known superhero within their viscinity to be on alert and to clear all civilians from any superhero compounds. The President of the United States was also to be evacuated to their air carrier for his own protection.

Back at the X-Mansion, Kitty Pryde was securing the school's younger students in a secure holding room for their own safety against Wolverine, whom she feared may attack the X-Mansion. Once they were secure, Kitty heads back to her room, where Storm was already packing their clothing. Kitty tells Storm that for all the prayers that she had made for Colossus' return from the dead, she hopes that they would work for Logan.

Deep in Manhattan's Baxter Building, two civilian employees was packing their belongings to evacuate. They were talking with each other about their employers, the Fantastic Four as they left the building. Upstairs, Ben Grimm (aka the Thing) was activating the forcefield computer to the building, thus enclosing the entire building in a forcefield, preventing anyone from leaving or getting in. Little did he know, however, that Wolverine was already inside, watching him from a vent, claws extended and ready to strike.
