They were able to squeeze everyone into the Blackbird with a little amount of fuss. To break the tension, which hung like a sheet over the cockpit, Gracie hoped up on Logan's lap and put her arms around him. Logan was not very fond of this idea, even though it got a good reception from the rest of the X-Men.
"It's good to see the two of you getting along," said Jean quietly to Logan.
He eyeballed her – he could tell she knew they had slept together – But he chose not to say anything as they lifted off.
The ride to the compound was uneventful, however, when they were on final approach, Gracie and Logan, both, became antsy. They landed quickly and then everyone exited the jet.
"This way" said Gracie as she started wading through the snow. It took awhile to get inside because the most direct route was through a minefield that Logan and Gracie sniffed out.
Inside was a wreck, much like the original Weapon X building, Logan mused. As they entered the cargo bay, they noticed a sea of papers that now cluttered the floor, "Someone was in a big hurry" muttered Logan.
"It'd go faster if we knew what we're looking for," said Cyclops.
"The command center" said Gracie.
Everyone followed her through cavernous corridors and hallways until they came to a heavy steel door. "Want to do the honors?" asked Logan. "Twelve is better than six," said Gracie smiling back as she popped her claws. Behind them the rest of the group watched in wonder, "I thought they hated each other" said Cyclops to Jean. Then, in an instant, Logan and Gracie sliced through the door like it was butter.
The smell of stale air hit them and caused everyone to cover their noses, Logan and Gracie especially. Inside they found the same telltale signs of a rapid departure. "We're gonna need some power" said Cyclops.
"I can get it," said Gracie walking to the door. When she left the room, the x-men started looking about for clues.
"I found a computer" said Jean as she picked up an overturned chair. As she sat down the screen hummed to life.
"Must have a back-up battery," said Cyclops. Jean began searching through the entire system and didn't find a thing. She was all out of ideas when she decided to try a backdoor trick. Immediately the computer sputtered and churned and the screen went red. "I think I found something," she said triumphantly. The other three stopped what they were doing and turned around to face the computer, which now was the only light in the room.
"Wait a minute," said Jean under her breath.
Cyclops heard her, "What, What?"
Jean looked over her shoulder, "Look at this" she began typing. On the screen it read: Project X-327, then Gracie's picture appeared.
"That's her" muttered Cyclops, "What's that?" he said pointing to the screen. Jean accessed the file, which was a video-feed. Everyone watched as a beaten, unconscious woman was dragged into the, then pristine-clean, hospital-like room and paced on a table, where she was restrained. Next they saw Gracie in a sealed room, laying on a bed, restrained, with deep incisions over her body. Below the screen it read: Gracie Stage 1. Next, they saw Gracie at Stage 2, behind closed glass, popping her claws reflexively at scientists on the other side of the glass. Then finally they saw Gracie Stage 3, training and going through series of stunts. Then the video feed halted abruptly and then started again, this time what they saw was three women in giant tanks, hooked up to machines, while being immersed in water.
Logan looked more closely, "They're identical," he said almost disgustedly. Everyone moved in to get a closer look then. Sure enough each tank read Gracie 1-2-3
"Clones?" asked Storm.
"Sure looks like it," said Logan.
The next series of film showed as time progressed and then only one tank was left, marked Gracie 1.
"Well all be damned," said Logan, "She's a clone"
Jean cut in, "I don't think so Logan, and according to this genetic code right here she's not supposed to even exist." Logan looked at her, "Say what?" Jean pulled up, what Logan could tell as a DNA strand, "This is her DNA," then she pulled up another screen, "This is her DNA when the mutant agent was introduced. It killed the other two Logan. They were the clones. They cloned her and then added your DNA to make the two of you alike, but it seems like the original was the one that accepted the foreign DNA sequence." Logan huffed, "You mean my DNA" Jean nodded.
Just then, behind them the lights flew on and all the computers in the control room sprang to life, and then simultaneously, they exploded.
"What the hell!" shouted Logan as he pulled Jean's chair back a safe distance. Gracie stood in the doorway. Behind them the computer's had sparked a fire.
"Gracie?" said Jean.
She just stood there, "I'm sorry," she said over and over, like a mantra.
"Gracie what's going on?" asked Logan.
She started to walk towards them, "It was a simple plan. All I needed was someone who understood. Like all of you" The reality of the situation sunk in, "I'll give you a thirty second head start Logan" said Gracie as she popped her claws and pointed them at the rest of the team, "It would behoove the rest of you to get out of here. I just want him," she said then pointing to Logan.
"Now wait a minute," said Cyclops in Logan's defense.
Logan stepped in front of him, "I can fight my own battles Cyclops," he said.
Logan pointed to Gracie, "Fine" Then he pointed over his shoulder at his friends, "They walk out of here and you can have me" Gracie had no objection to that. She stood beside to let them pass.
Before she left, Jean stopped in front of Logan, "Are you sure about this?" she asked. Logan nodded, "I said I'd take care of her and I will."
