Instead of going back to the medical bay, Gracie opted to rest. She wasn't hungry, she just wanted to sleep, so Rogue walked her back to her room so she could rest.
"Rogue" said Gracie.
She was halfway down the corridor when she turned back, "Yes?" said Rogue.
Gracie tried to say it but couldn't. Still Rogue caught what Gracie was trying to say. She smiled then turned and continued on her way. Leaving Gracie alone for the first time.
She slowly shut the door and walked to the center of the room. Then, like a freight train, the memory of that terrible night hit her head-on. Gracie flew back onto the bed in a fit of torment, howling at the top of her lungs.
She was hallucinating – but they seemed so real, "Got to fight" she told herself, "Can't let them take me!" she cried. Just then the door flew open. "NO!" yelled Gracie as a figure entered the room. She began swinging blindly but the figure was too strong. It pinned her down on the operating table, "Gracie" he heard them say in unison. Until, finally, their voices slowed to a single voice, "Gracie wake up!" SLAP! It was Logan.
He was holding her down. He had awakened her from this nightmare. She looked at him with tears in her eyes. Slowly she realized what was going on while Logan studied her with the utmost care.
"Are you OK?" he said softly.
This was not the Logan she knew – that she had been trained to kill.
"Oh God" she gasped before reaching up to kiss him. He returned the kiss with equal and more passion. Then they were lost in the moment. Lost in each other.
Logan snapped awake like a shot. To his side, Gracie lay still asleep with his arm wrapped around her waist.
Logan rubbed his eyes, "What a night" he mumbled as he tried to free his arm. This action woke Gracie, "Sorry" said Logan wryly.
Gracie smiled then rolled over to face him, "What are you thinking about?"
Logan smiled, "How I'm going to justify this to everyone."
Gracie leaned over and kissed him, "Don't worry so much."
An hour later the two slipped out of Gracie's room and headed in different directions. Each thought it was for the greater good that they didn't mention the previous night. Mostly that was Logan's idea. But when he arrived in the briefing room he had a feeling that the cat was already out of the bag. "Where's Gracie?" asked Jean.
Logan eyed her, "Around" he said curtly.
All around the room he could see eyes staring out at him, "What?" he said bluntly. "Nothing Logan" said Cyclops, "What's the matter with you?"
Just then Gracie and Rogue both walked into the room. "Oh good you're here," said Cyclops, "We have some things we'd like cleared up" He punched up a schematic of a building.
Gracie immediately recognized it, "That's the building where I trained," she said in a serious tone. The mood of the entire room grew from easy-going to total business.
"What were you doing there?" asked Jean.
Gracie shook her head, "I can't remember."
Cyclops spoke up, "What were you doing there when Logan found you?"
Logan cut him off, "She said she couldn't remember so she can't remember."
Cyclops looked at him and then at Gracie, "Well?"
Gracie was silent for a moment, "When I couldn't find Logan I went back to the beginning. To the start of it all."
"Something tells me that we stand a better chance in finding what happened to the two of you in that building," said Jean.
"I don't like it," said Logan.
"What is it Logan" said Storm.
Logan looked at her, "It's too easy Ororo."
Cyclops spoke up, "What's the worst thing that can happen?"
Logan then looked to Gracie. Her eyes were darting from person to person across the room until finally they met with Logan's eyes. He could tell that she wasn't actually kosher with the idea of going back there. "No one's makin' you go," he said.
Gracie blinked, "I want to" she said finally, "Maybe get some answers."
"Then it's settled. We lift off in an hour," said Cyclops.
