"Logan!" she called and held up her wrists as he turned. "I need to help him!" Wolverine slipped two claws into her cuffs, splitting them with a quick slice, then turned back to the horrified security guard. While Kit crawled to Bill, Wolverine started to advance on the frightened man.
"You...you're a mutant too!" he stuttered and Wolverine's answering smile was terrifying.
"Yeah. And that's my wife you were beatin' on. Makes me mad. I ain't nice when I'm mad."
Wolverine swung, retracting the claws a split second before connecting with the guard’s face. The man went down, but managed to scrabble for the gun, shooting Wolverine in the shoulder. Wolverine, barely affected, grabbed him by the shirtfront and lifted him so he could look into Logan’s furious face. "That'll cost ya, pal."
"You're all dead as soon as the udders ged here," the man croaked, blood pouring from his broken nose, then squawked as he was thrown into the hallway.
"Sorry, this is a private party. Yer pals were grounded."
Wolverine followed his prey out into the hall and proceeded to beat the hell out of him, savoring every bone he felt crack under his adamantium-enforced fist.
Kit, meanwhile, had reached Bill and Dori. He was still alive, but bleeding internally and externally while Dori hugged him, crying.
"Dori. Dori!" Kit shouted, breaking through enough for Dori to look at her. "I can help him, but you need to calm down. Do you hear me?" She grabbed Dori by the shoulders and shook her a little. "I need your help. Do you understand me?" Dori nodded and Kit nodded back. "Okay. Help me roll him onto his side. Now, take his hands, Dori, and concentrate. I need you to imagine you're channeling all your love for him into him through your hands. Do you understand? Can you do that?"
"Yes," the other woman whispered, tears still streaming down her face as she clasped Bill's hands between her own and prayed, letting her love for him overwhelm her. Kit then laid a hand over both the entry and exit wounds, closed her eyes, and let the healing flow out of her.
Her hands glowed white-hot as everything inside the gunshot wound started to close up. The blood flow dropped to a trickle, then stopped as the skin closed. She continued to concentrate, willing him to come back and open his eyes. As he did, her hands dropped away and, drained completely, she slumped to the floor.
"Dori? Honey, you okay?" Bill asked, sitting up. Overjoyed, Dori tried to hug him, was stopped by the cuffs, and settled for squeezing his hands. Light-headed, Kit managed to sit up against the wall. Wolverine stepped back into the room and she managed a tired smile as he knelt in front of her, whispering her name.
"I'm okay, love. Please, get rid of their cuffs, okay?" She closed her eyes and leaned her head back against the wall as Logan, using one claw, easily cut the handcuffs off the others, letting them hug one another.
"Is the little weasel still alive?" she asked softly as Logan returned to her side.
"Barely. You hurt?" Kit opened her eyes and raised one hand to touch him, stopping short when she realized they were still covered with blood.
"Only a little. I'll be all right. I’m just a wee bit drained."
"Everything okay here, Wolverine?" Major Fury asked from the doorway, two of his officers behind him.
"Yeah. Bill, you and Dori okay?"
"Yes, we're fine, thanks to the two of you. How can we thank you?" Logan picked up his wife and she lay against his chest limply.
"Thank him," Logan said simply with a jerk of his head toward Fury. "He's the one who sent us here t' keep an eye on ya. By the way," Logan said more quietly to Fury, who had stepped closer, "there's 3 dead security guards in the cabin next t' theirs, along with the trash out there in the hall. Ya might wanna have yer cleanup crew take care o' that."
"Right. Mr. Adams, do you want us to take you and your wife directly to the island now?" he asked, stepping back to help the couple to their feet.
"I don't believe that'll be necessary."
"Then I'll leave a couple of my men behind to replace your guards."
"That's your choice, Major. Personally, I have all the confidence in the world in the team you already sent." He clapped Logan on the shoulder with a smile. "Is Kit all right, Logan?"
"Yeah. It just takes a lot outta her."
"She saved my life. I owe her, and you, everything."
"You're very welcome," Kit told him softly. "I'm glad I was able to help. Logan, let me down, please." He let her slide down to put her feet on the floor, though she leaned heavily on him. "Major Fury, if I'm not needed here, I think I'd like to get cleaned up and have a bit of a lie-down."
"Ma'am, I think that'd be just fine. But you might want to, uh..." Trying not to look, he indicated her torn shirt. Bill Adams draped his shirt around her shoulders without a second thought, and Logan nodded his thanks.
"Dori, honey, why don't you help Kit back to her room?" Bill suggested, exchanging a look with Logan. "I'd like to talk to these men for a minute."
"Of course, Bill. Come on, Kit." She let Kit lean on her and lead her from the room.
Once back in her cabin, Kit was feeling stronger, but still tired and dropped into a chair to rest for a moment before going in to run a shower. To her surprise, she heard the water start and Dori stepped out of the bathroom to help her undress.
"Dori, really, I'm fine. You don't need to baby-sit me," she protested, and received a hard stare in response.
"Now, you listen to me, young lady. I'm in charge here. Is that understood?"
"Yes, ma'am," Kit replied submissively, but with a fond smile.
"Good." Dori returned the smile, her eyes sparkling again. "Now then, you're as weak as a kitten and I'll be damned if I'll let you drown in the shower. Logan would have my head if anything happened to you, anyway." They both laughed and Kit let Dori accompany her into the bathroom. "Hm. I don't think in your condition you'll ever be able to hold your head up if we tried to wash that hair. You'll have to do that later."
She pinned up the several feet of hair and held Kit's arm to steady her stepping into the shower. Feeling the hot, stinging water on her back, Kit sighed, closing her eyes. Dori pulled the curtain and told Kit she'd be in the next room if she needed her, then went to find her friend something to wear. She located the sexy satin nightgown they'd bought the day before and carried it into the bathroom, laying it on the counter for Kit.
