After lunch, Kit and Dori, who was tickled to find them cabin-neighbors, changed out of their swimsuits and went in search of their missing mates. Kit, following her hunch and Logan's trail, lead them to the card room where, to Dori's surprise, they found both men under a cloud of cigar smoke playing poker.
"There's Logan, just where I expected him," Kit stated, knowing he was aware of their presence. She glanced to the side where another suited guard stood impassively watching.
"I don't believe it! That's Bill with him," Dori exclaimed. The women approached the table and Logan looked up, an eyebrow raised. Their accompanying guard moved to the opposite side of the doorway to stand like a matching bookend to his partner, his edgy emotions not visible on his face.
"Hello, Logan," Kit greeted him, her eyes promising him an explanation. Bill Adams turned and smiled as he rose to kiss his wife's cheek. He was an attractive man Kit noticed—tall, with sandy hair, a square jaw and warm, brown eyes.
"Bill, I can't believe you're here, playing poker," Dori stated, touching his cheek affectionately. "I was so afraid you would spend all your time in the cabin doing work."
"I would have if I hadn't met Logan, here. I'd stepped out onto the balcony for some air, and he was there on the balcony next door. He said he was looking for a poker buddy, and I decided to hell with the work. Logan, I'd like you to meet my wife, Dorothy."
"Pleased t' meetcha," he replied, standing to shake her hand. He slid his arm around Kit's waist. "This is my wife, Kit. Bill Adams."
"A pleasure, Mr. Adams." Kit took his hand with a smile that had Bill looking at Logan as if to ask what he was doing here in a dark, smoky room playing cards when he had a wife like her.
"Bill. I see you and Dorothy have already met."
"Yes. I'm afraid I spilled a glass of iced tea on her by the pool, but she was most gracious and forgave me." Kit managed to look embarrassed, but Logan's brief tightening of his arm on her waist let her know she hadn't fooled him.
"Kit is wonderful company. We had a delightful lunch, then came to find you two. Logan, I must tell you how grateful I am for dragging Bill out of the cabin."
"My pleasure. He's a heckuva poker player." Kit returned the knowing squeeze around his waist and smiled at him. She knew if he was losing, he wasn't even trying.
"So, what's on your agenda now, ladies?" Bill Adams asked.
"Oh, I don't know. Bill, why don't you two moles come out into the daylight and take a walk with us?" He smiled indulgently down at his wife and gently touched her nose with a finger.
"All right, dearest. Coming, Logan?"
"We'll be right behind ya," he promised and all four strolled out onto the promenade deck, the two suited guards trailing behind.
"Don't tell me you two have been in there all morning?" Dori demanded cheerfully and Kit smiled as she watched Bill trying to explain to her the totally male joy of poker and cigars.
"What happened?" Logan asked softly.
"Her bodyguard slipped something into her glass when she wasn't looking," Kit answered. Their voices were low enough that someone would need their ultra-sensitive hearing to overhear to them. Logan nodded, bristling. It always angered him to hear of someone who was sworn to protect turning on his client.
"Yer gonna hafta stay close t' her, Kit."
"I planned to, dearheart. What about the other one?"
"Who, Chuckles? Model security goon. No sign o' anythin' else goin' on in his head. Unlike your friend back there. I can still smell the frustration and anger in 'im."
"I know. How do we get rid of him?"
"We don't, darlin'. We just keep an eye on 'im. If he needs t' go down, let me handle it."
"Unless I need to protect her." He nodded and pulled her close, so they walked hip-to-hip, an apparently affectionate couple out for a stroll. Ahead of them, walking hand-in-hand, Dori and Bill were talking quietly, then turned to their new friends.
"Logan, Kit, would you two like to have dinner with us?" Dori asked, smiling. "Please say yes."
"Well, my love?" Kit asked, making Logan snort in amusement. As if she ever needed his say-so to do anything she wanted.
"Why not, darlin'?"
"Wonderful! Kit, why don't you and I go find something to do until dinnertime? I think they're dying to get back to their game," she confided, taking Kit's hand and pulling her to her side. Bill looked sheepish, but Logan just grinned.
"All right, Dori. Maybe we could go shopping," Kit suggested impishly, laughing as Bill groaned and Logan rolled his eyes. Kit kissed Logan lovingly, pleased to feel his hands tighten on her waist before they parted. Dori watched them with a touch of envy until Bill brushed a soft kiss across her mouth. She looked up at him in surprise.
"Let's think of this as a second honeymoon, Dori," he whispered with a soft smile, pleased to see her glow with love for him. She watched the men depart with a stunned expression as Kit moved to stand next to her, smiling.
"He hasn't called me Dori in years," she admitted softly to her friend, and Kit laid a gentle hand on her arm, receiving a wide, beaming smile in return. "It must be because of you and Logan. You two seem so much in love, so right for each other," Dori sighed.
"We are," she agreed with a nod, her own expression soft as she stared after her husband. "We're like two halves of the same soul."
"That is so sweet. How long have you two been married?" Kit started to think, then suddenly straightened in realization.
"Nearly a year," she said musingly.
"I thought so. The way you two kiss is like you're still surprised to have such a wonderful person in your lives."
"We are. We've both lost people we've loved very much, and I think we really are amazed that we're both still here. Dori, may I tell you a secret?" she asked as they started to walk again.
"Of course. I love secrets."
"The day we dock at the island will be our anniversary." Elated for her friend, Dori hugged her.
"That's wonderful, Kit! We'll celebrate tonight, at dinner. Your anniversary and our second honeymoon," she sighed, then caught sight of her bodyguard still a discreet distance behind them. She frowned and started to walk again. "I just wish I could be rid of him. I don't like having someone following me around all the time," she muttered. Kit glanced back at the sour-faced guard, her mind racing. Slowly, a devilish smile curled her mouth.
"Dori."
"Hm?"
"Do you really want to lose your trained ape?" she purred and Dori whipped her head around to stare at her. Seeing Kit's smile, she felt an answering one on her face.
"Bill will be furious," she said, not sounding concerned.
"You'll be with me. What could happen to you? Then we can go shopping in peace." Dori, feeling younger than she had in the years since politics had become her life, laughed out loud and squeezed Kit's hand.
"Let's do it!" she whispered. "You have a plan?"
"Just follow my lead, darling."
