It was like watching a flame-thrower in action. The clearing blazed with reddish light as fire shot from his fingertips, arcing up like liquid, scorching the very rooftops and vines, burning them to ash in moments. The men below screamed as hot embers came down upon their naked backs, and Guiana screamed as well in anger and pain. She turned her attention to the generators now on the ground, sending the vines across the ground and toward the turbines to clog them and shut them down, but Blaze turned his head and fried them as well, and then sent arcs of flame into the trees after Guiana.
All this Logan saw, even as he leaped forward, quick as thought. The sharp, harsh pain in the back of his hand, and then his bone claws were free. He was going to go for Sabretooth, but this guy Blaze seemed like a bit more of a problem, especially since he was going for Guiana.
"You wanna fight?" Logan snarled. "How 'bout taking me on, bub! Never met you before, but allow me ta introduce myself. The name's Wolverine."
He was full on feral now. The only thing going through his mind was inflicting pain. He remembered the death of the lemur, the pain in Guiana's face, the worker's screams, the agony in Guiana's cries as the forest burned. His claws came up and across in a slicing motion, and he felt a sinister joy as he saw the utter terror in Blaze's eyes when he said his name. It was so nice to have a reputation. Blaze skipped back and raised his hand, apparently getting ready to wreathe Logan in fire, when Logan picked the guy up and tossed him over his head like a sack of potatoes. Hard. Blaze landed with a grunt, and was still, unconscious from having the wind knocked out of him.
Logan was getting ready to turn his attention to Sabretooth, but he found that he was a bit late for that.
"Well well, ain't this just like old times?" Sabretooth said with a grin, his lunatic face beaming at Logan in the red glow of the fire that was sweeping through the trees. He was peering at Logan from over Guiana's shoulder, who he was holding off the ground in his massive arms, one hand in her hair, craning it back, the other around her body, pinning her arms to her sides.
"She was going for the generators," Sabretooth chuckled. "She was hurting so bad from the barbecue going on up there that she didn't feel me coming." He turned his face to Guiana's ear and wrenched back on her head hard, making her bite her lip to keep in a cry of pain. "How's the hurt, now, sweetheart?"
"Let her go, Sabretooth," Logan growled, glowering at Sabretooth, his hands in fists. "Your prospectin' days are over, and I'm the one you want anyways. Just you and me."
Sabretooth threw his head back and laughed, his insane eyes flashing in the growing glow of fire. "So the lovebug has bitten Ol' Patch once more, huh?" He looked down at Guiana with amusement. "Aren't you the lucky one ... don't you know he's got a horrible track record with the dames? Everyone he loves dies, you know that? Sometimes I help out too," Sabretooth got an unsettling look on his face, and he smiled cruelly. "Yeah, sometimes I help the doom along. Wouldn't like old Logan here to get bored, would I? Hey Logan, what does this remind you of?"
He wrenched back on Guiana's arm so hard that there was an audible popping crack, and Guiana screamed to the sky. Logan's vision tunneled at the sound, and the red that framed Sabretooth's face wasn't just the fire.
"Hurt her one more time, Sabretooth, and I won't even bother to kill you quick," Logan hissed, looking for an opening, something, anything to get his hands on Sabretooth, and get Guiana free. Before the rage took over, before he charged without caring who got in the way. Before Sabretooth killed something else that he loved.
Sabretooth could see the fury in Logan's face, and he worked it to the hilt. "Hmmm, I wonder if she is as fun as Silver Fox was," he murmured, then smelled the side of her neck, his nostrils flaring. "Maybe we should find out." Slowly, he licked her throat.
That was it, for both of them. Logan roared in rage, his claws coming up. He could barely see, he was so mad, beyond mad actually. He was going to get around Guiana somehow and rip Sabretooth to ribbons. And then, even through her pain, Guiana's eyes flew open wide, the green gold reflecting the forest fire around her, and shrieked in rage and disgust, a sound that filled the ears, spiraling up and up. It seemed impossible for such a small woman to make so huge of a sound, and for a moment, Logan and Sabretooth froze, their eyes wide in shock, and in the sudden silence after her scream, the only thing that could be heard was the crackle of fire.
And before either of them could recover, even though their senses and reflexes were above that of normal human, there was an answering bellow from the forest. A reply, low and deep and rolling, and the most menacing thing that Logan had ever heard in his life.
And another call, from off to the left, deep and old and ancient, as the very canopy began to sway, and there was a sound of breaking limbs, the loud snap of trunks of trees pushed over as something huge walked through the forest. Enraged, its roar carried over the very roar of fire, as it felt the heat of the flames, which seemed to madden it further.
"For there are things in the forest that are more dangerous even than I." He remembered she had said that in the city. Things that dwelled in the secret places. Things that she couldn't control. The Unseen Ones.
"Something I will not be able to undo." That trance she had been in, the scream of fury, the reply (she called them) and they were coming, and not happy. And she couldn't control them.
"What the - " Sabretooth began, and looked over his shoulder at the sounds behind him, of breaking tree-boughs ad shaking leaves, the red light creating hectic shadows.
"Put it this way, bub, they're a LOT more cause of concern right now. They're coming to do a tap-dance on your temples."
As if on cue, a tree high above them toppled forward, its top wreathed in flame. The fire was definitely out of control, and the tree crashed down, its trunk splintered, sending showers of sparks down upon them, singeing their hair and choking their lungs with hot ash.
Logan took the chance to spring forward and tear Guiana out of Sabretooth's grasp. She cried out in pain from the sudden movement, but regained her feet fast enough, her eyes wide with fear and Logan put himself between her and Sabretooth. Logan raised his claws and got ready to rumble, when he felt Guiana tugging on his arm.
"No, Logan!" she cried out urgently. "There is no time! We have to go!"
Sabretooth roared in rage, now that his bargaining chip was out of reach, and prepared to launch himself at Logan, but Logan caught movement from the forest just behind Sabretooth who, seeing his eyes move, rolled and turned.
Logan didn't see what it was. The only thing he knew for sure was that it was huge. Its head - if that big misshapen thing up there was a head - was somewhere in the canopy itself, and its arms, or forelimbs at any rate, dragged to the ground. It was wreathed in darkness and smoke, and even his eyes couldn't make out entirely what it was. The whole forest had gone silent with the first bellow that had come from the thing, even though he could hear the panic of the birds and monkeys fleeing the fire, they were making no cries or noises or fear. Logan was still mad, but he wasn't a fool - he knew without a doubt that this thing wasn't something he wanted to mess with.
He also knew that it wasn't alone.
"Logan," Guiana hissed, tugging at him again. "Please, the fire ... it makes Them angry. They have come, but I can't speak with Them. Hurry. They think all Ground People make fire!"
That at least got through. He saw Sabretooth stand up, bewilderment traveling across his face, and then saw that big shadowed forearm lash out and down out of the trees as if it were spring-loaded, so quick that Sabretooth barely had time to duck out of the way. A huge fist - mottled gray and green skin, if it was skin - slammed into the earth with such force that the ground shook, leaving a depression a good two feet deep It would be a hopeless battle. Blaze was coming out of his swoon, and when he looked around, he shrieked, and raised his arms, sending another flaming blast of fire at the nearest dark figure, which roared in such rage and agony that Logan thought his eardrums were going to burst. If it sounded angry before, it was completely insane with rage now, and an answering bellow came from Logan's right, and then his left. They were almost surrounded by the shadowy, hulking things. (Listen to the lady bub and get her outta here!)
Logan snapped out of it. Guiana was his first concern. Quickly he scooped her up in his arms and turned to the opposite part of the clearing, hoping there wasn't anything nasty waiting for them on this side, By now, Blaze's pell-mell fire had surrounded the whole area, and tears streamed from Logan's eyes from the smoke.
"That way," Guiana coughed out, and pointed.
Logan leaped into the forest, keeping to the ground and trying not to jolt Guiana overmuch, but he really couldn't help it, speed was important. Hot embers were catching the forest floor on fire as well, and the flames roaring overhead made the heat press down upon them. At least the flames were high enough at the moment that they wouldn't suffocate, if they didn't cook first.
He smelled it first; water, and hopefully, a lot of it. He broke through the underbrush with an extra burst of speed as a limb, flaming, came crashing down behind him. He came to the banks of a river, where a good deal of animals were trying to swim across, some scorched and still smoking. He splashed down in, and paddled into the center of the river, looking up at the blazing red of the fire, wondering if it would jump the river -
He managed to grab onto a passing log, and get Guiana to cling to it. He tried to fight the current to push them to the opposite shore, but he heard her scream out a warning. He looked up in time to see a huge bough come crashing down from a tree over head. A searing pain filled his head, turning everything to sparks, and then nothing.
