- You must wonder... - she started.
- How did you track me down? - interrupted Logan, his glance lost in the stars.
- I... we were reading the newspaper. Suddenly, we saw a picture of you and the other X-men fighting in the defense of a mutant that was being lynched. There were immediately some speculations about you being the Eternal. Except in the story they called you Wolverine, not Logan. Anyway, the council decided to investigate, and chose me to go to the US and find out if you were Logan or not. It was just a guess. A very good guess, if I might say. I just hope we make it in time.
- How do I know if you're lying?
- You don't. You have to trust your instincts and yourself. I can't help you with that. I don't know why you lost your memory. Maybe the trauma of the adamantium bonding process and the memory implants. All I know is what I saw. You opened and disabled the traps to that cave. No one even knew of its existence. That means something.
She turned her back on him and started climbing the mountain.
- Well? - she said - Maybe you should think about it on the way up.
They went up. She used her powers to get them to a small camp where some other mutants awaited. They stared at Wolverine with fear and suspicion. They could feel the tension in the air.
- Extend your claws - whispered Daniella - they'll know it's you.
Wolverine did what she said. The people smiled in relief. They came all to see him and talk about cases and stories of his past. Many had probably been exaggerated over the years. After a while, they started asking questions. His inability to answer them caused some kind of hysteria on the people.
- < Daniella, are you sure this is him? >
- < Yes! I am absolutely sure. He had some problems and lost his memory, that's all. >
- < That means he doesn't remember the...? >
Before she had a chance to answer, an old man came out of a tent. He was far older than anyone Jubilee had ever seen. He looked like a turtle, with the skin larger than the body. He came slowly, and everyone was silently staring as he came. He was blind, and touched Wolverine in the face. He then smiled.
- Logan! - said the old man, very emotional - < It is you! How are you my friend? >
Even though Logan didn't remember any of this, the old man reminded him of a person he thought was dead. After the implant, his memories weren't trustful, but there was one he believed more than any other, the one of his father. And the old man looked like him. Even his smell was familiar. Suddenly he remembered. He must have put that man's memory as of his father in order not to let it go away with the implant. An unconscious act, true, but a valuable one as well.
- Clator! - said Logan, hugging the old man - < I can't believe you're still alive! You must be 130, at least! >
- < 141 tomorrow. You haven't changed a bit. So, are you done seeing the world? >
- < I'll have to start all over again, since I lost most of my memories. I don't know why I recognize you... >
- < Well, after fighting together for some thirty years and you marrying my sister, I sure hoped you would. By the way, did you meet Daniella? Doesn't she look exactly like my sister? We gave her this name in her memory. She is your great-granddaughter, and unless she gets married soon, she's the last one of your descendants. >
Logan was absolutely marveled. He didn't know he had a family, but a granddaughter! He looked once again at the brunette. She blushed. Her voice echoed in his mind, "If I told you, you wouldn't believe me". He grinned. Jubilee watched quietly at the scene, relieved. Even being his great-granddaughter, she was family, therefore no competition. Clar told Wolverine the whole story, from the beginning. Wolverine listened to it all again without blinking, just excited from hearing an old friend again. By morning, without sleeping, Wolverine was already prepared to leave for the test. All he had to do was climb to the top of Huascaran and get water from the holy fountain. He could take two people with him, but only one of the two could fight. He called Daniella. Jubilee seemed very sad.
- You're my family - he said to her. She smiled - But Jubilee has been my partner longer, and I owe Clator a last battle. Just wait 'till we get back, OK?
- Sure. I'll be praying for you. All - she said, looking at Jubilee.
