Part Nineteen

True to form, she found them together, and in the middle of a fight.

She helped Gambit up off the ground at her feet as Wolverine landed beside him. "You two stay outta here til you can behave!" the bouncer shouted. She laughed.

"Cadie? What you doin here, petite?" Gambit asked as he tried to focus his eyes on her. She shook her head as Wolverine got to his feet. "Thought y' were leavin."

"Yeah, that's what I thought too darlin'," Wolverine said quietly as he lit a cigar. "So how'd you find us here, eh?" He wasn't nearly as intoxicated as Gambit, due to his healing factor.

She grinned, and something twisted inside him. "Jus followed de trail o' broken bodies, homme," she said lightly. "C'mon, help me get Gumbo in de car, hehn? I take you boys home, y' can sleep his off." She giggled.

"Gumbo? Homme, y' teachin de petite bad manners, non? An I am not drunk," he said thickly. He took a step and stumbled, and would have fallen if his companions hadn't grabbed his arms. "Okay, maybe a little drunk."

Two men had come out of the bar and were watching them closely. Cadie whispered to Wolverine. "Homme, dose de men you were fightin wit'? Dey still look pretty angry, non?"

"Yeah they do, darlin'. Get him outta here, I'll take care of this."

She shoved Gambit in the back seat, where he promptly stuck his head back out the window to watch. "Cadie, petite, y' 'member N'Awlins?" He grinned an Cadie laughed. "T'ink I'd take bets on who'd win, an you do de head bustin, non?"

She put a hand on Wolverine's arm. He looked over at her and saw her grin. "How bout y' let me take dese boys, mon ami?" she said with a laugh. "Make us some money too, non?"

He smiled nastily and stepped aside. "Be my guest, darlin', jus remember what I taught ya."

She approached the two men and they stood away from the wall they'd been leaning on. "Unnerstand you hommes have somethin agains' my friends, non? Why don' we settle dis 'mongst ourselves, y' win, y' get t' pound on dem more, I win, we go home." She smiled, knowing they'd take the bait.

The bigger one looked down at her tiny frame and laughed. "You honestly think you can take us out? Make it interesting, honey, and we might just take you up on it. He flexed his fists. "Make short work of a little thing like you all by myself."

She grinned evilly. "Didn' I make it plain? Bot' o' y' together couldn't take me out, I'm willing to bet. What kinda stakes y' have in mind, hehn? I tol' y' what I want."

He stepped closer and she could smell the beer on his breath. "We win, we're not only going to pound your friends into the dirt, we're going to take you home with us. Take it or leave it, doll."

"Terms o' de fight, boys. No rules. If y' can handle dat part, den I accept yours. Bien?"

Wolverine started forward in protest, but Gambit held him back. "Trust me, mon ami, de petite know what she's doin. We used t' pull dis one all de time when we needed money. She be okay."

Wolverine looked around at him. "You ain't nearly so drunk as you made her think, eh Gumbo?" he said with a grin. "Tryin ta get her ta cut loose herself, eh? Wish I'd thought of it."

He turned back when he heard the battle join in earnest. She was swarming all over the two men, in, out, and all around, landing a blow wherever she managed to find a free spot. The big one grabbed her from behind, around her arms, but before the other man could get in a punch, she braced her feet, pushed back just enough to shove him off balance, and then ducked forward. He went flying and landed head first against the brick wall. She turned to the other man. "Give up yet, homme?" she panted.

"Not hardly, babe," he gasped back. "He's big and slow, I'm not." She ducked just in time to turn a heavy blow into a glancing one across her cheek. She cried out and stumbled, and again Gambit held Wolverine back.

"I know if she really in trouble, homme. Just relax and enjoy, non?"

"Part o' the game, huh Gumbo?" He settled back against the car again, watching carefully.

*Merde he's got more endurance dan I t'ought. Gotta finish dis quick now, I'm runnin outta steam. Outta condition, Cadie girl.* She stood her ground as he charged at her, waiting til the last second, then leaping into the air as he rushed by, landing on her feet behind him and smashing against the back of his neck with her interlaced hands. He went down in a heap, groaning. She grabbed him by the hair and lifted his head. "Guess dis means I win, non?" She grinned as she let go and stepped over him toward the car. "C'mon, mes amis, let's go home now, hehn?"

"Only if you get in the back an let Gambit hold some ice on that, darlin'," Wolverine chuckled. "It's bruisin pretty bad an ya don' want questions from this group. Bad enough me an Gambit get into the fights, they'll have a fit if they think you started one. I'll drive."

He heard the voices from the back seat as he pulled out into traffic. "So how much you get, petite?"

"Didn't bet, mon ami. Jus had a good time." He stared at her and she sighed. Then she put a hand in her pocket and brought out two wallets. "Haven't even counted it yet, Remy," she sighed. "Y' gon' make me give it back, non?"

The laugh from the front seat stopped whatever Gambit had been about to say. "Why give it back, darlin'? They won't say anythin anyway..... how do you think they'd feel goin to the police and saying hey this little girl stole my wallet after she mopped the floor with my head? Just don't do it again, darlin'. Promise me that."

She crossed her fingers behind her back and Gambit hastily hid a grin. "Okay, mon ami, I promise."

Epilogue
Sinister waited patiently in another lab. "Soon. They will forget about me again and then I will strike." He held up a data disk and smiled evilly. "And with this DNA data, I will be able to hit them without them even knowing it. Soon."
