Part Fourteen
The program was complete. Sinister returned to the
lab, not speaking, merely brushing Cadie aside as he crossed to
another device across the room. She glared at his back, once more
wishing she dared threaten him outright. But with her power
neutralized, she didn't dare. *Would be a good way to die, girl. Get it together.*
Slowly, careful not to disturb him, her hand lightly
grazed a metal pin on the device. Using only her fingers, she slowly,
quietly worked it free and slipped it into her pocket. Sinister didn't
turn, but she still was so scared she shook slightly. Then she saw
Gambit's eyes watching her. She nodded slightly, then quickly moved
her hand in an odd fashion, and watched his eyes widen. *Good, homme.
Y' 'member de Guild signals. We jus' may have a chance, if y' can bring yourself t' trust
me.*
Gambit forced himself to stay outwardly calm, but
inside his confusion ran rampant. *She usin de signals, she tellin me
t' get ready t' fight. What she up to? Don' dare trust her though.* He
nodded almost imperceptibly at her. *I be ready, whatever comes, petite.*
She turned, and caught Wolverine's eye. Again her
hand moved, and again she received a slight nod. *Remy must have tol'
y' de codes, cher. Dat's a good t'ing, I don' have to improvise quite so much.*
"Arcadia, I do not trust you, girl," Sinister
rumbled. He turned to face her and she turned a hand signal into a
nervous tugging of her hair. "But as I have seen, your obedience is
total when you feel someone threatened." He gestured and Scalphunter
came forward into the room.
*Easy, girl. Y' don' know how much he saw, don' give
anyt'in away.* "Y' got a point?" she ground out, lacing her tone with
a bravado she certainly didn't feel. "And what's he doin' here? I
t'ought y' wanted me t' guard em, hehn?"
"Yes, that is what I want. Scalphunter, give them to
her." The man shrugged, then handed over a small package and stood, arms folded
while she opened the box. She stared up at both of them, her confusion plain.
Scalphunter frowned. "I think it's a big mistake,
but Mr. Sinister wants you armed. So I brought you your knives. And
your other tools." He leaned closer to her, whispering. "Maybe you'll
feel grateful enough to reward me?"
Her temper flared again. She slapped him, hard, and
backflipped, one foot kicking at his face, landing on her feet with a
knife in her hand. "Come near me again, mon ami, an I use dis. Den where you be, hehn?"
Sinister scowled, and the scowl deepened when he
heard laughter from behind them. "Look like she got your number, mon
ami," Gambit called, grinning. "I t'ink de lady's not int'rested, hehn?"
"Stop this, both of you," Sinister thundered. Both
of them froze. "I have no interest in what transpires between you while not in my presence. But
while you are here, you will behave like adults, is that understood?"
Cadie nodded, her mind racing. *T'ink dis jus got
easier, but it take time t' do. And Remy, y' an your friend maybe hate
me more 'fore dis over.* "I behave if y' do, mon ami," she said with a
shrug. Flipping the knife up, she caught it and placed it in the
scabbard on her waist with one smooth motion. Then she caught the look on his face.
"This ain't over, girlie," he ground out. "Only delayed til we're alone. Remember that."
Sinister rumbled again. "You two go. Scalphunter,
you know what I want done. Take her with you, keep an eye on her. I
still don't trust her completely. And then report back to me."
"You heard the man, doll, let's go." He grabbed her
arm and hustled her out. She had time for one last glance over her
shoulder toward Gambit and then they were gone.
Wolverine's voice cut through the quiet. "Looks like
you got a problem, bub. Can't even keep control of the troops. Not a
good sign, if your lookin' for world domination."
Gambit laughed again. "Wolverine, look like de big man not so big, hehn?"
"Silence!" thundered Sinister. Both men fell silent
under his regard, and Gambit paled slightly. Sinister moved toward him
and he forced himself not to flinch. "You of all people should know I
always win, LeBeau," he said softly into the silence. "You could have
been free with them, but you chose to defy me. Now you will pay the price."
"Some t'ings jus not right for a man t' do, Sinister. An if I gotta pay for doin' right,
den dat's okay. Bring it on. Y' won' break me again."
Sinister leaned even closer, his face only inches
from Gambit's. Wolverine could barely hear the words, but he clearly saw the fear
in the Cajun's face. "Boy, I don't want to break you. I'm going to kill you."
