Part Twelve

Gambit peered into the darkness surrounding him and scowled, his black on red eyes not adjusting well. Silently he cursed the collar around his neck. *Weren't for dis, I'd been free long time back. Or if I had my picks.*

Unfortunately, he had nothing. He'd been searched very thoroughly when they brought him to this place. Not one item that could possibly be of any use had been left to him. And to make matters even worse, his hands were cuffed, and then a chain run between the cuffs and tethered to the floor. He had almost no range of movement left to him.

*Dere got t' be a way t' get free. I jus ain' found it yet.* He tried once more, pulling on his shackles, but it was no use.

Suddenly the door to the enclosure opened and Scalphunter came in, followed by two others who were carrying people. "Make sure they can't move too much, and they can't reach each other," he barked.

Silently the two unconscious people were placed a distance both from each other and Gambit, and then shackled as he himself was. Gambit tried to hide his shock as he recognized his friends in the dim light. *Cadie, how dey catch you, hehn? You de best de T'ieve's Guild got t' offer. An Wolverine, too. Dey must been waitin for you."

Scalphunter gave a nasty laugh. "Have some company, Cajun boy," he growled.

Gambit merely glared at him, refusing to answer. *You jus wait, mon ami. I get free, you in trouble. And if dey been hurt, I'll kill you. Dat's a promise.*

He watched as Scalphunter and the others left, glaring at their backs. Again, he tried loosening the cuffs, but no use. He turned to look at Arcadia as she groaned, watching her regain consciousness. "Cadie, chere, why y' doin dis? Seems y' in de same boat wit' us, now. What dey promise y', y' brought me in, hehn?" His bitterness seemed to leap across the room at her.

Her voice was a bare whisper of sound in the dark. "Remy, I tole y' de truth. 'Zactly as dey tole me. Y' t'ink I could do dis t' my only friend? You t'ink so little o' Arcadia?" Her hands fidgeted as she tried unsuccessfully to open the cuffs. "Don' blame y', though, mon ami. So what we do now, hehn? You're not gon' trust Arcadia t' help y', I know dat."

He winced at the tone in her voice. He was about to answer when Wolverine's voice cut through the darkness.

"I don't trust you either, kid. You ran out on me once before. What's to keep you from doing it now?"

The dim light glinted off something on her face and Gambit realized she was crying. "Don' neither o' y' trust me? Hehn?" Her chin came up and with it her voice. "Den dat's jus fine. Arcadia don' need either o' y'. An I won' try t' convince y' o' de truth, either. I didn't know anyt'in bout dis, I swear, but y' don' believe dat, so dat's de end o' it." She clamped her lips together and fell silent, not looking at either man.

Wolverine met Gambit's gaze and shrugged. Gambit nodded slightly, so slight that it might not have been noticed. Whatever Wolverine might have answered was lost, however, when Scalphunter and the rest of the Marauders came for them.
