Part Ten
She was halfway up the tree by the time the sound
faded. "Sound good to me, mon ami. You comin?"
"Right behind ya darlin." He swarmed up the tree and
followed her across the fence, the limb bending under his greater
weight. *Hope this holds me. She's a real lightweight.* He lowered
himself til he was hanging right next to where she now stood. "What
next? Damn." He heard it first, a furious volley of barks, coming
nearer. "Back up, kid. Let old Logan handle the pups."
She put a hand on his arm as he moved forward. "Dey
won' bother us, hehn?" She held up a small cylinder. "Masker. Dey get
confused, see somet'in dey can't smell; keep em busy for a while.
Let's go. Sounded like dat boom come from back o' de house, non?"
He nodded quickly, but before they moved, another
explosion rocked the ground under their feet. "Sounds like he's
getting closer," Wolverine remarked as they moved toward the sound.
She didn't answer. All her concentration was on a
small object at the corner of the window. She pulled him down just as
it swept their direction. She bit her lip. "Hope we got low enough in
time, cher. I'm sposed t' be good, why am I making dese mistakes,
hehn? Security cam, an I forgot it." She cursed quietly while they
waited for it to swing back around.
He touched her shoulder lightly. "Looks like we got
more problems than a camera, kid," he growled. She spun and saw the
guards, moving toward them, guns drawn. Something inside her snapped.
Her voice became low, melodic; an irresistible siren
song, and it brought the men closer, spellbound. Then she had them.
Her eyes made contact with the first, then the
second, and they both went down, screaming, clutching their heads. She
shook her head sadly and grabbed Wolverine by the arm. "We have t' go
now, cher. Dat won' hold em forever. I didn't hit em dat hard." *Not
nearly as hard as I hit Remy. Or you.*
He was already moving, but not in the direction she
intended. He launched himself behind her, fist raised. It didn't take
long, and a third man lay with the others. "Gotta watch yer back,
kid," he growled at her as they moved again toward the house.
"Something wrong here, I don't hear Gambit making a ruckus. They
couldn't have stopped him so quick could they?"
The voice froze both of them in their tracks. "Of
course we could, fool. Did you think I would waste my time subduing
him? He is quite harmless. I set off the explosions you heard. I knew
you would be fool enough to draw the wrong conclusions. And now you are mine."
