Part Nine

*This is getting to be a habit.* Wolverine crouched with Arcadia in the shrubbery across from an elegant house on the outskirts of town. Not quite big enough to be a mansion, but still impressive. *Done more hiding today than I have in a long time. Hope she's as good as she thinks she is.*

He glanced over at her, his eyes taking in her black clothing, right down to the cap on her head. He nodded approvingly and she grinned. "I tole you I was good, mon ami," she whispered. "Dis is standard in de Guild." Her face hardened and her voice showed her anger. "Dese people here, dey be high ups in de Assassin's Guild. An de lady, she want Remy dead. She say he de cause o' all her problems leadin de Guild now. T'inks she kill him, problems'll all go 'way. All it gon' do is put de two Guilds back at war." She slipped her glasses off and stowed them in her bag. "Don' look at my eyes, cher Wolverine," she warned. "You do, I won' be able t' help you........ I can't control dis t'ing I do. Jus' know it hurts people." *And I refuse t' do dat t' you again.*

He nodded agreement without looking at her. *That's gonna make things a little difficult, darlin'.* "So you got a plan? It's dark, and I don't want to give 'em too much time. He may already be dead, you have to face that." *Right. Like I want to face it. Sure.*

Her voice shook, but only a little. He admired her control. "I won't believe he's dead till I see de body for myself, mon ami. Remy de closest t'ing I got t' family. I won't believe he's gone till I know." She glanced down at her bag, checking the contents one more time. "Have ever't'ing we may need, cher Wolverine. I get us in and we find Remy, hehn? And we watch each other's back, non? I know you got some sort o' power, Remy tole me dat. It gon' protect us?"

He flexed his fingers and three bone claws shot out of the back of his hand. "Think these'll do?" He gave a wicked smile. The claws retracted and he spoke again. "I can also help out findin Gambit. Follow his scent."

She stared at him, then slowly nodded. "Den we go. I watch your back, Wolverine, you watch mine. Fair, non? And we get our friend back."

His hand on her shoulder stopped her. "All the time we been together, I still don't know your whole name, girl," he said quietly. "We got some time, it ain't completely dark yet. Sit down here and calm down. Let's talk."

Against her will, she smiled. "What I hear you ain' much for talkin, mon ami. Man o' few words, non?"

"When I choose to be." He was itching for a stogie, but he knew better. *Might give our position away.* "You're the one always talkin', darlin'."

She motioned him forward. "Business before pleasure, mon ami. T'ink I jus found our way in, hehn?" She indicated a tree very near where they were hidden. "De branches cross de fence, hehn? Save us some time wit' de sensors. No need t' rewire de fence."

He nodded, and was about to comment when the sound of an explosion tore the air. "Looks like he's not waitin on us, darlin'. What say we help him?"
