Part Eight
She stopped across the street from the cafe and put
a gentle hand on Logan's arm. "You watch from here, hehn? Henri won'
trust me enough t' tell me what I need t' know he sees you, compris?
He don' know you, an dat make him nervous." He glared at her, but her
eyes didn't waver behind those glasses. "We find Remy much quicker my
way, homme. You trust me, non?"
His glare turned to a grimace. "Not one bit,
darlin'. But I don't have much of a choice, right?" He folded his arms
across his chest and leaned back against the building they stood next to.
She smiled, and something tugged inside him. "Non, mon ami. No choice at all." Then
she moved quickly across the street and into the enclosure.
He watched her sit down with a heavyset man, and
what appeared to be a heated conversation ensued. Her hands
gesticulated wildly as she appeared more and more angry. Finally she
simply rose and stalked away from the table.
She struck off down the street and he followed her
at a distance, keeping her in sight, but not close enough she'd know
he was still there. *Running out on me, eh kid?*
Suddenly she ducked into a shop and he halted. *If
she goes out the back, I'll lose her. What is she up to?* She
reemerged with a small package under her arm and began walking again,
toward a small motel at the end of the street. He followed slowly,
wary of a trap. *She tricked Remy, so stay cool.*
She disappeared inside the building, and he took up
a position where he could see both doors. *What is she up to?*
He never heard her behind him. Her voice in his ear
startled him badly and he whirled. "You t'ink I run out on you, hehn?"
she whispered. "Never. T'rowing off my shadow, homme." She gestured
toward a tall man pacing outside the motel. "I know where Remy is now,
mon ami. And we need to go now, 'fore dey kill him."
He grinned. "Lead the way, darlin'."
