Part Six

"Tired o' waitin, petite," Remy seethed. "Dey wanted me here, dey got me here. So why we still waitin, hehn?"

She gave him a disgusted look. "You of all people should 'member how de Guild works, LeBeau. Dey callin de shots, so dey do t'ings when dey want. Dey said it was 'portant, dey'll be here."

He began to pace the length of the room. "Y' know I'm not patient, petite. Wish dey'd come already."

"Careful what you wish for, LeBeau. Sometimes you get it."

They both spun at the voice, but no one was to be seen. Arcadia's heart began to race; she had recognized it, but she kept quiet. Her Guild loyalty demanded it. There was a knock on the door, and Gambit shushed her, moving quietly to stand behind it. Then he nodded for her to open it.

She had barely touched the knob when it burst inwards, throwing her across the room. Again, her catlike grace saved her; she landed on her feet and rushed back toward the fray. For the battle had been joined in earnest.

Gambit had disposed of one attacker, but the other held some sort of weapon, and when it discharged, Gambit went down hard. A scream tore from her throat at the sight, and she landed on the man, clawing at his face, shrieking curses at him. He effortlessly shrugged her off and she bounced across the room, landing on the floor between the bed and the window.

*Not a good place, girl. Get out of here! Can help him better if you're still free.*

Hating herself, she leaped from the floor, diving through the open window, her hand closing around the railing of the terrace and swinging herself up to the next floor. She heard the men below, arguing.

"We have what we came for, let's just go, hehn? LeBeau is de important part, de girl is no t'reat."

"If we leave her free, Jean-Paul, she may find us. Then all dis would be worth not'ing."

She heard a bark of laughter. "You t'ink dey leave dat to chance, homme? Assassin's already got a contract on her head. Her life is over."

Her blood ran cold at his words. *A trap, all dis a trap, an I brought Remy right int' it. How could I be so stupid??? Have t' follow dem, see where dey take Remy.*

A hand clamped over her mouth from behind and she found herself pulled back against someone's body. Some sort of blade was at her throat, and she froze.

*Assassins? Already? Merde, dey must've been waitin' fo' us.* But the voice in her ear was the last one she expected.

"Make a sound, darlin', and I'll use it. What happened to Gambit?"

She relaxed a fraction. "I'm not sure, mon ami. All I know is I was told to bring him back to N'Awlins or get myself killed, hehn?"

"I'm gonna let you go, and you better not try anything stupid, darlin'. Don't try to run; you won't make it."

His arm dropped and she moved forward slightly, not wanting to think about how it felt to be next to him. "I won' run, Wolverine. Can't. Got t' help Remy, hehn? Was stupid, homme, now I gotta pay de price. Gotta help him outta dis mess I got him in, non?" A tear slipped down her cheek. "Stupid woman. He de only one ever cared bout what happened to me, and I betray him. Nice, non?" She stifled a sob and leaned over the railing. "Guild obedience make me stupid, homme. Guild never t'reaten one o' its own. An I was too blinded by tradition t' notice. Ain't de T'ieves Guild got Remy. It's de Assassins."
