Part Five
"I don't believe ya let 'em go, Storm," Wolverine
said quietly. She could see him holding his temper with both hands.
"The little darlin's dangerous." He rubbed his head, thinking.
"You know my reasons, Logan. And I have faith that
Remy will be able to keep her out of trouble."
"Yeah, and who keeps him outta trouble, eh? You
should have at least sent someone with 'em."
She gazed at him coolly and he began to fidget. "Are
you volunteering? I would have thought you would want to keep your distance from her."
He controlled his temper with difficulty and stared
back at her. "If you're saying I'm afraid of her, think again, 'Roro,"
he ground out. "I'm more worried about what she'll do to Gambit. Face
it. She came here in the dead of night, tried to break in, caused a
lot of damage. All to get to the Cajun. My question is why? Somethin'
doesn't smell right about this, darlin', and I want to know why."
She continued to gaze at him, not speaking. Finally
he couldn't stand any more. "'Roro, he's your friend. And he might be
in danger now. Let me go after them. You know I can protect him if I'm close enough."
She moved toward the window, looking out over the
water, feeling some of her calm slip at his words, though she was
careful not to show her turmoil to him. Then she turned and spoke very
softly. "Then go, Logan. Keep my friend safe. I did not like his
returning to New Orleans, but I could not refuse. Not with that child's life at stake."
"She could have stayed here, 'Roro. We'd have kept her safe."
"You do not know the Guilds as well as Remy and I
do, my friend. If they want her, nothing we could do would stand in
their way. Remy has done what he thought he must; now, we will do the
same." She straightened, again meeting his gaze, and he stiffened at the sight of tears
welling in her eyes. "Find them, Logan. Keep them safe, and bring them home."
There was nothing more to say. He held her tightly
to him for a moment, and then went to the phone to book a flight.
